SWCAP works to eliminate the causes and conditions of poverty. Each year, our gala raises funds for a specific anti-poverty service and honors those who help us carry out our anti-poverty mission.

The People Helping People Gala is attended by positive, passionate and motivated people who want to help SWCAP address the issues of poverty in SW Wisconsin.  We honor those who help us carry out our anti-poverty mission.  We celebrate our successes.  And, we enjoy a fun and purposeful evening of music and food, while raising critical funds for a specific anti-poverty cause.

The Gala Promotes Our Anti-Poverty Mission.

Each year, we honor individuals and businesses who make a difference in the lives of those who struggle with poverty.   This year, our Community Partner Awards, one per county, will go to those who work in the area of suicide prevention.

The Gala Honors Anti-Poverty Change-Makers.

For 2019, our Gala fundraising will focus on suicide prevention services and programs, with an emphasis on preventing farmer suicides. Wisconsin had a record number of suicides in 2018; most in predominantly rural counties. Several factors contribute to increased suicide risk among rural farm families: social isolation, a culture of self-reliance that eschews asking others for help, a shortage of mental health resources and support services, and ready access to lethal means.

We know the health of rural communities is linked with farmer wellbeing. Recent events, including historic rain, trade disputes and declining global dairy markets, have exacerbated farm uncertainties. Since 2013 net farm incomes for U.S. farmers have declined 50%. Wisconsin farmers led the nation in farm bankruptcies for the past 3 years. There has been a 49% decrease in the number of Wisconsin dairy farms over the past 15 years. Studies show that these sorts of stressors can increase the risk for suicidal ideation. Creating resilient rural communities in light of these challenges takes all of us working collaboratively to build strong networks of support in the face of seemingly overwhelming obstacles.

To reach our goal to raise $50,000, we need your help and hope that you will support our Gala event as a sponsor, auction donor and/or attendee.  Your donation is tax-deductible and sponsorship will be highlighted in our event program and promotional materials, including our public-facing online and social media presence. Please consider being a partner to prevent suicide in our communities.

SWCAP
COMMUNITY ACTION AWARDS

PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE  -  SWCAP does not work alone to achieve its mission to eliminate the causes and conditions of poverty.  We rely on many helping agencies, individuals, businesses and organizations.  Each year, beginning with our 50th Anniversary in 2016, we recognize those who help further our anti-poverty mission.  Nominations must be made by (or through) a SWCAP staffperson or board member, with selection by the SWCAP Executive Director and Operations Director.  Self-nominations are not accepted.

COMMUNITY PARTNER AWARD  -  SWCAP honors, from each of our five counties, one individual (not a SWCAP employee/volunteer), business or organization who has:

  • Contributed greatly to the betterment of their local community in an area related to the annual Gala's fundraising focus.  For 2019, that focus is suicide prevention, with an emphasis on prevention of farmer suicides; and
  • Made a positive difference for those who live in their local community; and
  • Demonstrated a generous helping spirit toward those in need, through innovation, action or support for helping program(s).
