Food Security Coalition
Food security means that all people in Southwestern Wisconsin have access, at all times,
to enough food for an active, healthy life.
High food security exists when a household has no problems with, or anxiety about, consistently accessing adequate food.
Marginal food security exists when a household has had problems or anxiety about accessing adequate food, but the quality, variety and quantity of their food was not substantially reduced.
Low food security is when a household reduces the variety, quality and desirability of their diet, but the quantity of food intake and normal eating patterns are not substantially disrupted.
Very low food security exists when, at times of the year, eating patterns of one or more household members were disrupted and food intake reduced because the household lacked money or other resources for food.
The Southwestern Wisconsin Food Security Coalition is a group of individuals who work together to raise awareness about community food resources and to maximize existing efforts of food and nutrition services in the southwestern Wisconsin counties of Grant, Green, Iowa, Lafayette and Richland.
Mission. The mission of SWFSC is to work with food resources to increase the access to and availability of healthy, affordable, local foods.
Vision. All food resources in Southwestern Wisconsin promote healthy eating and provide affordable, local, healthy food. Consumers in Southwestern Wisconsin are “food literate” and choose affordable, healthy food.
TOOLBOX: Volunteer Recruitment
Ideas & Tips from Volunteer Recruitment Training
(March, 2018 sessions)
The Coalition plans to address a diverse array of issues including:
"In a world of plenty,
no one, not a single person
should go hungry."
2012 G20 Conference
Our first project involves supporting food pantries’ efforts to build a stronger volunteer base to sustain current and future efforts, including delivering food to those who cannot make it to the food pantries. We developed a toolbox to help pantries recruit volunteers.
Our hope is that the toolbox will provide each pantry with the resources needed to customize their volunteer recruitment efforts.
"Teach a man to fish, he eats for a day. Teach a
man to garden, and the whole neighborhood
gets tomatoes."
"Hunger is not an issue of charity.
It is an issue of justice."
"Greens feed our souls, refresh our minds,
and nourish our grateful bodies."
"If a free society can not help the many who are poor and food insecure, it can not save the few who are rich."
"It is important for people to realize that we can make progress against world hunger, that world hunger is not hopeless. The worst enemy is apathy."
